How to Determine if a Startup is Ready

Everybody dreams of owning and operating their own business and it is difficult to ignore those dreams when inspiration strikes. Many people will immediately begin making plans for launching their business. This includes finding the right location, creating the branding and finding funding. There are dozens of others steps to take and the process of creating the company on paper can practically become a full time career. Unfortunately, despite all the careful planning many companies still fail. How is this possible?

There are problems with the idea.

Sometime a new entrepreneur will fall in love with an idea because they realize that no other company offers what this business will provide. This is when they need to wonder why no one has begun this type of business before. Is it really that innovative and exciting? Or, is it a company that has minimal appeal other than just as a curiosity? A successful company has to offer something consumers either need or want to sustain themselves. It will not sell if it cannot offer any benefit.

There are problems with the company.

Define the mission of the company. Explain how this organization will appeal to consumers, market and supply their products or services. How will the business reach out to the community? What aspects of the company could change if needed, and what must remain exactly as it was from the start? A company will struggle to survive if the owner is not capable of answering these questions easily.

There are problems with the owner.

Anyone without leadership experience may be surprised to discover how much responsibility this entails. It is challenging to think and behave like a leader every single day. The other concern is the amount of time that owners invest in their companies. This does not end after the first month or year. In fact, many entrepreneurs spend 12-14 hours a day, every day on their businesses for decades. This may sound acceptable as a vague theory, but leave people miserable once it is reality.

There are many other considerations that people have to ponder before they will truly know if their startup is worth launching. Sometimes it is more sensible to stop and think things through or to let go of the idea, even when everything seems ready to go.
